5. The Offseason, Part 1

The Offseason Mid July Jason hadn’t touched a disc since May. This was the first time in years he hadn’t touched a disc in over a month. He’d been invited several times to play casual scrimmages or sub for his teammates’ rec league team. Each time Jason carefully crafted an excuse that allowed him to avoid the event without worrying his friends. The family’s move to the States provided a bounty of such excuses. It was now only two weeks before the move. Madison was a long way away from Vancouver. If the desire was to get there as fast as possible, the trip could be done over 3 long days of driving. However, to limit stress and to attempt to enjoy the trip, Jason’s parents planned for a 6 day voyage. As the house was slowly packed up, growing emptier by the day, it left Jason feeling uneasy to even be there. As much as he could, he got out of the house and explored his hometown while he still could. He would ride his bike for hours, listening to music, returning to his favorite sp...

4. A Wolfpack

A Wolfpack May 29, Madison, Wisconsin, around 10am On the fourth field in the second column, Madison North Women's team was playing their quarterfinal match. Seven players were moving in unison as Madison North moved to field the pull. In bright orange jerseys, the opposing players of Oregon High School ran down the field to cover their matched player. Two Madison North players hung back to track down the pull as the others pushed downfield. #17 of North received the pull and immediately fired a pass to #49, who bore a striking resemblance to X from the North Men’s team, but wore her hair in cornrows instead of an afro.  In contrast with the offense that their men’s team counterparts ran, Madison North Women’s used a vertical stack offense. Five players, each with 4 or 5 meters between them moved to stand in a straight line in the center of the field. The score of the game was 12-9 in favor of Madison North, a single point here and they’d move on.  Anya, the player in t...

A Soldier May 29, Madison, Wisconsin, around 10am Discs were flying around a massive field complex tucked next to the UW-Madison Campus. Just shy of three dozen teams were playing  simultaneously with intense battles raging on each field. The 16 fields were arranged into two columns of eight fields. As was standard with many ultimate tournaments, the top seeded teams in each division were granted the first field in each column and so long as they won each game, could stay on the field.  On the second field in the second column a team was celebrating. A dozen or so players clad in purple jerseys were in an uproar, all centered around the player with the #55 on their chest. Frederick, in a white jersey with green numbers looked up from the ground. Frederick’s jersey had the number 66 on it, and the white of the jersey contrasted with the copper color of his skin and the dark brown of his long hair which was corralled into two braids. Moments earlier he had laid out for a ...
